CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Have you ever had sex with another bear-shifter while in bear form?” Elaina cocked her head to one side. “Or like, do you save all sexy-time activities for when you’re human. Or do you have like a furry in-between kind of hybrid form? That could be kind of kinky.”

“What the fuck is wrong with her?” Finn’s jaw dropped. “People give me a hard time for saying inappropriate things.”

“I apologize, I’m still trying to figure out if you guys are pulling my leg.” Elaina sat on her bed and tugged on her earing. “Jillian, you’re my soulmate, and I know you’d never lie to me, but this whole thing just seems like a prank. You’re wearing dirty clothes and no makeup, and you’re living in the woods like it’s the third world. I’ve seen you literally cry because you had to use a porta-potty.”

“That thing was disgusting!” Jillian crossed her arms. “At least in the woods, the dirt smells clean.”

“We’ve been over this; it was a music festival.” Elaina groaned. “It’s supposed to be disgusting. That’s part of the experience. And don’t even try to act like you didn’t love every minute of that trip.”

“I didn’t love the porta-potty.” Jillian turned up her nose.

“Is she always like this?” Finn pointed to Elaina

“Pretty much.” Jillian shrugged.

“I lack tolerance for bullshit.” Elaina narrowed her eyes before calling to Jillian over her shoulder. “I’m getting my cards out.”

“No, Elaina.” Jillian groaned. “Please, not the cards.”

“You’re an oracle, aren’t you?” Elaina crossed the room to a table that sat in front of a north-facing window. “If you’re a real oracle, you should be able to read my cards.”

“That’s not how it works,” Jillian whined. “The food is going to be here in a few minutes.”

“Exactly, and we’ve got some time to kill.” Elaina swayed her hips as she walked.

“I thought Finn and I were supposed to shower.” Jillian frowned.

“Go ahead and show him where I keep the towels, and I’ll have these ready when you get back.” She made a dismissive gesture without looking up from her table.

“Great.” Jillian sighed, motioning for Finn to follow her into the bathroom, which was bigger than his entire bedroom. She turned on the steam shower and showed him the knobs. “This is hot, and this one is cold. The hot water pretty much lasts forever, so don’t worry about saving me some.”

“Do I just…” His eyebrows tilted up as he reached for the bottle of hand soap on the sink.

“Oh, no.” Jillian giggled, pointing further into the shower. “She has lots of different soaps and shampoos over there.”

Finn fanned the steam as he squinted through the fog at the tiled shelves that housed dozens of colorful bottles.

“Wow.” His eyes widened.

“I’m going to go indulge her curiosity for a while.” Jillian headed back to the door. “Enjoy your shower.”

Closing the door behind her, Jillian found Elaina lighting candles on the ceremonial cloth that was now spread out on the floor. It was essentially a black, glittery scarf with an astrological diagram of the solar system.
